Alila Ubud Resort
The Alila Ubud Resort is perched up on the Ayung River ridge outsude Ubud in Payangan. Its comfortable in it’s surroundings, carefully designed to reflect the gentle nature of the area and to offer guessts the best in climate comforts. The raised alang alang roof of the dining area and lobby are the first thing guests see after their meander down the private driveway
All around is hushed and the call of birds dominates the afternoon ambience as I arriave to sink unto the lobby chairs and sip on a cool glass of water while my check in formalities are taken care of. On the table in front of me is acurious thing, a DVD player ! On closer inspection I see that it is preparing to show me the choice of activities and delights that are part of the Alila experience. With a simple on touch button I am introduced to Yoga, Reiki, The spa, walks and village visit as well as wonderful images of people enjoying their time at Alila Resort.
I am about as active as a rag doll, city life has drained me of everything and all I want to do is curl up under the welcoming smiles of the front desk staff. I chose the Alila Ubud Resort because I knew they could revive me, refresh me and send me back to my world renewed I could have slept a week at the beach but instinct told me that sleep would just make me sleepier so I chose a conscious living program at The Alila Resort instead so it is with gratitude that I look forward to it starting. As my bags are removed to my room I am informed my first spa treatment awaits me. I follow one of the many smiling staff across the court yard to the Mandara Spa. this is the first of the Mandara Spas in Bali and is run as a showcase of the high standards maintained by the company throughout their operations. Immediately I feel a little more livelier. The warm smell of essential oils inside the spa reception room is comforting and as my therapist explains my treatments I begin to feel the tension unwind. On her expert advice I make a choice of massage oil that incorporates, Vetivert which has a strong aroma of the open field, it is a delightful scent.
Once in my treatment room I disrobe, I feel like throwing away all my clothes never to see them again and take up a life of barefeet and sarongs. I can dream and dream I do the under pressure of my therapist’s hands, her gentle inquiry of ” too hard ? too soft ?” I murmur ” just right ” to each inquiry and as she rubs my body with warm volcanic rocks I can feel the heat reach down instead me and slowly melt away the knots.
Now many might imagine that to have a job writing about holidays and spa treatments must be a breeze and for the most part that true however there are time in life where stresses and strains become insurmountable and a holiday from even a dream job is required, so instead of lying on the massage table conjuring up attractive adjectives for the sensations I am experiencing I just left go. I let go and dream away. I can feel the warm stones and the therapist’s hands as she uses the long stroke technique on my body but I am far away in a verdant landscape full of the aroma of the forest. I am warm and weightless, I am barefoot and unfettered, I fly, for hour it seems, in this dream and very gently I return to the words of the therapist. ” You may relax for awhile before your lunch ”
Wow I look around me, a forest outside the open window. maybe I did fly away! Lunch is served under the gorgeously high alang alang roof. I marvel at the beautiful table settings, the colour of the plates. To my eye everything has become clearer, colours more vivid, the light almost liquid as it floods the room with an early afternoon glow. From the cuisine naturelle menu I make my choices. The menu is designed by the executive chef, Stuart Blair, he is a firm believer in providing high quality cuisine using the best organic ingredients that he can find and has a reputation as a stickler for certified and genuine organic produce.
From these ingredients he creates a vibrant menu that is designed to feed the body and the senses in the most pleasant way and my experience at Alila Resort can confirm that while music may be the food of love, food is love for the soul. The cassava, coconut and coriander broth come with a skewer of shitake mushrooms, and the mixed herb and tofu stack is so tasty. I chose it because I knew it would be good for me but Stuart has ways with tofu that make it into the most delicious food, I wish I knew how to do it my self. With my Mango Green tea by my side I slipped into an afternoon daze until it occurs to me I had a room to retreat to.
The contemporary decor, sliding Japanese style doors, sweet tropical gardens and Balinese fabric on the cushions, all combine to make the room ny perfect hideaway. I studiously ignore my bags, the books the contain and all those things I had planned to get done on my break, they can wait. I slip under a shower and shortly between cool cotton sheets I sleep away the flight, the city streets, the sound of phones and taxis, I sleep away rain and chilly mornings and I sleep away the afternoon.
An unheard of delight in my life. It is dusk when I wake and surprisingly I am hungry. Walking past the pool bathed in moonlight I return to the restaurant.
The indigo sky flickers with the wings of bats and the night time sky play its part in the beauty of the scene. This time around I choose the caesar salad and the char grilled free range chicken breast.

Going out somewhere with friends is just as much lot of fun, as coming to this website. Always has something to laugh at, a lot of things to share with each other, and it’s much easier to make friends here, than anyone would think! I come to this website when I have problems, and always leave it in a good mood. It really helps a lot!
